시작하겠습니다. 이 분은 사실 한국인보다 한국의 역사를 더 잘 아는 외국인이라고 할 수 있습니다. 예일대와 동경대, 하버드대에서 동양사를 공부했는데 95년 서울대서 연암 박지원과 다산 정약용을 연구하기 시작한 이후에 ‘실학 사상’에 깊이 빠져 있는 분입니다. 임마누엘 패스트라이쉬 지구경영연구원장. 한국 이름은 이만열인데 오늘(30일) 이 원장과 인터뷰를 해 보겠습니다. 이 원장은 지금 대한민국의 위기를 실학정신으로 돌파하라고 주장해왔는데, 사실 외국인에게 이런 얘기 듣는 게 좀 쑥스럽기는 하지만 어쨌든 들어보도록 하겠습니다. 이 원장님 어서 오십시오.

한국에서 달아올랐던 미투운동의 열기가 서서히 가라앉기 시작했다. 지금은 사람들의 관심을 끄는 사건 차원을 넘어 평범한 한국 여성들이 겪고 있는 성희롱 및 성적 학대 대응 방법에 대해 의미 있는 논의를 시작할 때다. 이러한 논의 측면에서 매우 중요한 변화가 있었다. 최근 한국에서는 이주 여성의 성적 학대에 관심을 기울이기 시작했다. 이전에는 이주자들 가운데 특히 불법체류자를 대상으로 자행되고 있는 이 문제가 거의 드러나지 않았다. Read more of this post

“Getting “me too” right in Korea”

Now that the dust is starting to settle after the hyped up debut of the “me too” movement in Korea, it is time to move beyond attention-grabbing incidents and start to lay the foundations for a meaningful discussion of how we can respond to the concerns of ordinary women in Korea about sexual harassment and abuse.

On the bright side, there has been an extremely important shift in the debate. For example, programs that highlight the sexual abuse of immigrant women in Korea have been produced recently. This widespread problem for immigrants, especially the undocumented, was previously practically invisible. Read more of this post

I had the chance to see the both touching an brutal film about a 19-year old single mother who tries to survive in the South Bronx working as a stripper. The film was outstanding, and compact. It raised the critical question of whether it is possible to make films and news reports about real life, rather than fantastic PR material. These days, even the so-called progressive media is touched up to avoid the ugly and the cruel. Yet only with such media will be start to confront the truth and launch into a positive cycle.

“Hold Me Down”  is filmed in the locations where the events depicted actually occurred; in the Mott Haven Housing Projects and in an actual brothel, and features a cast of non-actors / women survivors of sexual exploitation and domestic violence.
